Activity levels

Walking Tours: Ratings 1 to 5 

1 = Easy: Flat terrain, with no walks longer than two hours. None of our tours are totally flat, but our boat trips can all be rated "easy" if you decide to just walk around the ports where we moor.
Tours: only our boat–based tours in Turkey, Croatia, and Greece Dodecanese Islands would be easy IF you decide to skip the hikes and stay in town.

2 = Easy to Moderate: Flat to rolling terrain with some rocky areas and some steep climbs/descents. Daily activity between 2-4 hours per day, mostly in the morning but sometimes also in the afternoon. Max distance 12 kms. Tours: Puglia & Basilicata.

2+ = Easy to Moderate but frequently on rocky, rugged terrain with the occasional short but steep climb. The walks may be quite short, however, which is why they don't get the "3" rating. Daily activity 2-4 hours, and max distance 8-10 km. These tours include our boat trips in Turkey, Croatia, and Greece plus our Greece Cyclades Islands tour. 3 = Moderate: Rolling to hilly terrain with frequent climbs and descents, often over rocky terrain. Daily activity between 3-5 hours, mostly in the morning but sometimes also in the afternoon. Max distance 16 kms. Tours: Tuscany, Dordogne, Provence, Sicily, Lake Como, Andalusia.

3+ = Moderate for fit hikers, Challenging but do-able for not-so-fit hikers. These tours entail rolling to hilly terrain with frequent steep ascents and descents. The "+" indicates that they also involve more rugged, rocky, or steep terrain than the classic 3. Fit hikers will find them moderately challenging and a good work-out, while not-so-fit hikers will find them challenging but rewarding. In Amalfi and the Cinque Terre the climbs are often on ancient stone staircases or rocky trails, so just take your time. In Sardinia and on the Dolomites "light" the terrain is often rocky with the occasional stretch of scree or loose rock. Our most common comment about the Cinque Terre walk is “More challenging than I expected but I am glad I did it”. Tours: Cinque Terre, Amalfi, Sardinia, Dolomites "Light". 

4 = Rewarding: The walks have challenging uphills and downhills and are a bit longer. Daily activity is up to six hours. Max distance  20 kms. TOURS: Classic Dolomites Hike, Tuscany Mountains. 

5 = Challenging: Difficult terrain, sustained climbs and descents, at least 5 hours of activity daily, and up to 7 hours of walking. You need to be fit, experienced hikers who enjoy being challenged. Distances: up to 25 kms. Tours: Republic of Georgia – Tusheti National Park. 


BikeTours: Ratings 1 to 5

Van support:  All of our bike tours except for the Croatia Boat & Bike are van supported. This means your luggage is transferred for you, and the van sweeps the route so tired bikers can always choose to get a ride. This also means that every bike tour can become an easy bike tour, if you are happy to ride in the van.

Optional extensions: All of our bike tours feature optional longer/challenging rides, so strong cyclists can adapt even our easiest tour into a challenging one by simply adding kms or challenging climbs. 


1 = Easy: Flat terrain or gently downhill with the wind always at your back. Tours: ZERO. grin

2 = Easy to Moderate: Flat to rolling terrain. Daily activity is 4 to 5 hours. Max distance about 60 kms. Tours: Venice to Bologna, Innsbruck to Verona, Easy Andalusia, Mallorca.

3 = Moderate: A mix of flat and rolling terrain with the occasional sustained climb of up to 4 kms and some short, steep ups and downs. Daily activity is 4 to 5 hours. Max distance 60 kms. Tours: Dordogne, Provence, Puglia & Basilicata, Tuscany Coast, Piedmont.

4 = Rewarding: Rolling terrain with only occasional flat stretches. Frequent hills, some being up to 7 kms long, with sinewy roads, so good bike handling skills are required. Daily activity 4 to 5 hours. Max distance 70 kms. Tours: Tuscany Chianti, Sicily, Crete, Umbria, Andalusia, Slovenia.

5 = Challenging: Hilly terrain with sustained climbs and descents with only occasional flat stretches. Frequent hills, some being up to 20 kms long, with sinewy roads, so good bike handling skills are mandatory. Daily activity 5 to 7 hours. Max distance 120 kms. Tours: Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, Dolomites, or any of our other tours with customized extended rides.
